Phil Ware Fundraiser Jazz Gala
Sunday 3rd April 2022
Andersons Grill & Bar - Sligo
1:00pm | €10
Tickets available at the door.
On Sunday the 3rd of April from 1-3pm in Andersons bar and grill, some of Sligo's amazing talents come together in help someone very close to their hearts, Phil Ware.
Phil Ware is one of the Irish jazz’s most celebrated musicians, a much-respected pianist and an inspirational teacher, who led his own trio to national and international acclaim, as well as playing with some of Ireland’s - and the world’s – leading jazz musicians, including Louis Stewart, Peter Bernstein, Perico Sambeat, Bobby Wellins, Honor Heffernan and Ian Shaw.
In June 2020, leading Dublin-based jazz pianist Phil Ware suffered a stroke which has left him severely disabled and facing a long period of rehabilitation. To help Phil recover and to support his needs into the future, a group of his closest friends, led by renowned vocalist Honor Heffernan and Phil’s half-sister Alison Cooke, established The Phil Ware Trust so that those who wanted to support Phil’s recovery could donate to an official, properly governed fund. The response to the trust has been extraordinary, raising over 50k in a few months, but more will be needed to ensure that Phil receives the treatment and support he will need for the rest of his life.
Launching the afternoon will be the outstanding Bughouse Band, led by the venerated Stan Burns who will be joined Karl Burtham on guitar, Mark Murphy on piano and Tony Travers on drums.
They will be joined by the Richard Nelson trio. Richard is the guy that everyone has heard but no one has heard of (outside of the top-tier level of Irish musicians). His credits include Van Morrison and Paul Brady, but his discography is even more impressive. Joining him is the gifted Jenny Hallahan on bass and Con Schmaucks on drums.
Next we have some of the finest musicians living and working in the North-West, the Ed, Ned, Ted and Tont Quartet. Made up of an army of Eddies, Eddie MacFarlane on guitar, Eddie Lynch on piano, Eddie Lee on bass and Ken 'Tonto' McDonald on drums.
Also taking part will be the Kobe Trio. Based in Sligo the ensemble have concocted a collection of some beautiful soundscapes, weaving their original compositions and intertwining them integraly into their solos. Featuring Mark Murphy on piano, Jaimie Carswell on bass, Con Schmaucks on drums with very special guest Cathal Roche.
And we've saved the best for last. Two of Sligo's finest jazz ensembles, Sligo Academy of Music's Young Jazz All-stars and the Senior Jazz Orchestra. Made of up of some of Sligo's youngest and most talented up and coming musicians.
This is an event not to be missed and it's for an amazing cause.
Tickets are €10pp and all proceeds go to the Fund for Phil. Tickets available at the door.

In June 2020, leading Dublin-based jazz pianist Phil Ware suffered a stroke which has left him severely disabled and facing a long period of rehabilitation. The celebrated UK-born pianist has enjoyed a particular rapport with Triskel audiences over the years, and his Music Network-sponsored residency in 2017 – introducing the venue’s new Steinway concert grand piano – brought some of the world’s most celebrated musicians to Cork.
To support Phil’s rehab, Triskel Arts Centre is gathering some of Ireland’s leading jazz stars for a unique and unmissable night of music. The proceeds of the concert will go towards supporting Phil’s ongoing rehab.
A Night for Phil will feature the members of Ware’s long standing trio, bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady, alongside some of Phil’s closest musical associates, including vocalist Honor Heffernan, saxophonist Richie Buckley and guitarist Hugh Buckley. Also paying their respects will be two of Cork’s leading jazz musicians, trombonist Paul Dunlea and pianist Cormac McCarthy.

Swing into Summer on Sunday July 11th with a packed gala concert of new and favourite jazz standards and instrumental music from some of Ireland’s finest artists, with a bit of everything you’ll enjoy. From the evocative voice of special guest, renowned singer Mary Coughlan, to cool electronic-influenced modern jazz, there’s something for all tastes.
The Swing into Summer Gala is all in aid of a cause that’s very dear to the Irish jazz community’s heart - The Fund for Phil Ware.
Phil Ware is one of the Irish jazz’s most celebrated musicians, a much-respected pianist and an inspirational teacher. In June 2020, Phil suffered a rare form of stroke - which left him severely disabled, unable to speak or to move the right side of his body. To help Phil recover and to support his needs into the future, a group of his closest friends established The Phil Ware Trust for public donation to support Phil’s recovery. Over the last year Phil has made remarkable progress, thanks to the wonderful care he has received from his medical team and the support and encouragement of his closest friends. He may never perform again at his former level, but there is hope that, with the right treatment and support, and with the funds to back him up, he will be able to leave hospital and live an independent life.
The Swing into Summer Gala is the brainchild of many of Phil’s former music students, supported by colleagues and friends, who have experienced first-hand his incredible musicianship and pedagogy, and are living proof of his influence on the jazz world in Ireland.
As a flexible online stream, you can bring the concert into your home, or even your garden, sip on a cool drink and enjoy some new fresh sounds and old jazz favourites, presented by host and jazz aficionado DJ Billy O Hanluain, and interspersed with noted jazz musicians sharing some favourite stories of Phil.
Over the course of the day you’ll hear sets from an array of outstanding musicians, to create a perfect jazz soundtrack for your Sunday.
Special guest for the day is Ireland’s most soulful jazz and blues singer, Mary Coughlan. Whether you’re into folk, blues or jazz, you can’t fail to be moved by the emotional depth, expression and power in her voice, forged from an extraordinary life.
Rising singer-songwriter Jennifer McMahon’s music also illustrates the emotional power of song, exploring personal and collective themes of love, loss, belonging, sensuality, and compassion.
Enjoy a melding of improvisation from Dublin trio Berri. Featuring vocalist Jenna Harris, bassist Derek Whyte and drummer Matthew Jacobson playing intricate interpretations of music from the 60’s, folk songs and jazz standards.
For listeners with post-rock leanings, guitarist Matthias Winkler leads quartet ATSCH, bringing a cool change of soundscape to the afternoon with work influenced by musicians like Sigur Ros.
Poetry-lovers will enjoy the sweet voice and literary-inspired work of Emilie Conway, bringing poetry and art to life with classic jazz vocals, while bi-lingual vocalist and composer Riona Sally Hartman melds lush vocal harmonies, acoustic softness and surrealist stories into her melodic songs.
Vocalist Aleka with her quartet explores jazz standards from her debut album ‘Person I Knew’ in her unique style. Her agile musicality draws influences from home country of Romania interspersed with eastern rhythms, as well as inspirations from Debussy, Bartok and other classical composers.
The programme is a fitting tribute to an inspirational musician and educator, and one which any music fan will enjoy.
All monies donated to this benefit concert, officially sanctioned by the Phil Ware Trust, will go exclusively to cover costs associated with Phil’s medical care and ongoing rehabilitation, as determined by the board of trustees, which includes distinguished figures from the worlds of medicine, finance and music in Ireland.
